Three questions with *aid*

Tell us a bit about yourself. Do you dj regularly or just for fun?

Uhhh, about myself: I was born and fell in love with musique!!!

I dj regularly just for fun. Seriously, I am lucky to be able to dj regularly around four dates a month in Münster (thanks to Raffa). It started about 3 years ago and quickly became essential for me. I really love it. Playing no instrument while being a total music addict, djing is a way to be a little more than ‘just’ a consumer of music. I’m still working with Vinyl (and less CD), but I understand the reasons for using a laptop. Besides djing I tinker with music production; it’s fun but never sounds the way I wish. Years ago I started a small record label project called “The Cul-De-Sac Komitee”. No Techno/House. We released four vinyls and some CD records but at the moment it has drifted off a bit (less money, less time). But we will continue.

How would you describe your musical influences?

I started listening to Indie/Alternativ as a teenager and ended up quite late on electronic music beginning with TripHop (DJ Shadow) and I never thought that one day (or night) I would be listening to Techno and House. However, at one point I recognized that this is the ultimate music for the night(life) (around 2004/2005). Before that I listened to a lot of end 70s/80s Post Punk stuff (Wave, NoWave) and Post-Rock. All in all I simply enjoy music and I love the fact that music always offers something new.
I’m very careful about saying that I don’t like a certain kind of music as by now I’m listening to a lot of different stuff. I think most styles of music offer something interesting and are worth listening to. Jazz, Klassik, Noise, Hip Hop, Folk … there’s always something exciting to find.

I love minimalistic structures. May it be in real ‘Minimal’ of the 60s/70s or the minimal sound of postpunk like ESG. I like the reduction, the point where single sounds become important and small changes are significant. I like the effect of repetition and long build ups. One might say I like the relation of music/sound and time and with Techno and House it’s the same: hypnotic atmospheres and strong grooves. I love Jens Zimmermann (production and dj-wise), Villalobos, Christian Burckhardt…But when djing I also enjoy uplifting house and pushing techno elements as well as the impact of melodies and well placed chords. It’s all a question of composition. I don’t like it too close-packed.

What is your mix about?

I try to regularly record mixes, mainly to promote a monthly party I organise in Münster at the Hot Jazz Club. This one was recorded in February from Vinyl with only two tracks from CD. It’s a selection of more or less actual stuff I love und play. In a way it’s my ‘idealistic’ view of a sonic journey through a night. Starting low, creating an atmosphere and groove, then slowly but surely building up as long as possible; introducing some explosions – energy or emotional wise – holding the groove and tension, some breathing, some highlights… (I like the more wavelike way) and at one point start fading out the night = fade in the day in a way that the sound never has to end.

Three questions with Nguoi Dúc

Tell us a bit about yourself. Do you dj regularly or just for fun?

DJing is my hobby. Sometimes friends ask if I can play at their party, but I never had proper gigs. I would like to spin at a club though. I guess I’m just too lazy to really get it going! However, my other passion is producing music. I have a nice home studio. The special thing about it is I don’t use a computer. It’s all hardware synths and drummachines controlled by an AKAI MPC and everything ends in a 24 channel Mackie board. When I need to record I have a digital multitrack. That’s an utterly complicated and uncomfortable way of producing, but I like it. I started with Reason, that was nice, but I wanted loads of boxes and knobs to show off when friends visit. Not that you get me wrong, I like the features of Ableton Live or Logic or whatever! I’m not a conservative analog nerd. Hey, I switched from decks and mixer to Laptop and Serato, so I’m progressive. But making music for me is suffering from restrictions!

How would you describe your musical influences?

My musical influences have their roots in black music. I listen to all kinds of soul, jazz, funk, hip hop. If I had to choose a country to emmigrate to I would probably choose Brazil, cause I love brazilian music! I also like a large variety of electronic music. I’m very versatile concerning my listening habits! When it comes to club music I especially like deep and soulful house. It can be monotonous as long as it has this “groove” like some kind of ethnic percussion. I’m pretty bored of minimal, but I’m afraid I’m not the only one. At the moment I try to create something like deep groovy downtempo house with sampled beats. Let’s see if I succeed!

What is your mix about?

My mix is basically my definiton of modern club music! I would love to hear that kind of music when I enter a club. I tried to create some sort of trade off between soul and groove, melody and monotony. That’s it!

He has also released electronic music himself under the moniker Peloton, and if you’re into mashups, chances are high that you’ve heard one of the tracks he made as Bumtschak. As beingboring is not a regular DJ, we consider this mix a special treat, which takes its listeners on a ride from its dark and brooding beginnings to synthpop heaven, dipping a bit into house and techno along the way. The mix being boring? Certainly not!

Three questions with beingboring

Tell us a bit about yourself. Do you mix regularly or just for fun?

I’m not a DJ, but from time to time I like to express my feelings in form of a mix. I don’t like live mixing, though, cause contrary to most techno and house lovers I’m not a vinyl fetishist. Techno and electronic music in general has always been about the future (TECHNOlogy!) and it’s almost the year 2010, so I don’t understand why people still prefere a data medium which is far too big, bulky – and expensive. I love to download the music from the internet, carry it with me on my iPhone and arrange it in iTunes. I’m even fascinated by browsing through the cover artwork on the screen! My first mixes were made in ACID, but I’m using Ableton Live now. Both programmes allow me a lot more freedom and creativity than a pair of Technics.

How would you descsribe your musical influences?

I never liked handmade music and was fascinated by electronic music since my childhood: As I child I loved the typical electronic pop music, especially Pet Shop Boys (hence my alias) and all those Stock/Aitken/Waterman stuff (Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, etc.). Although it’s not techno, it was electronically produced music with sounds I had never heard before and without the typical Rock’n'Roll attitude. Then I heard “Pump up the volume” by M.A.R.R.S. which absolutely blew me away. From that moment on I was into Techno. I grew up in a very small village, so the only source to hear that kind of music was MTV’s Party Zone (they played a lot of early UK rave music like The Prodigy, Altern or radio shows like Steve Mason Experience on BFBS, HR3 Club night with DJs like Sven Väth, or “Raum & Zeit” with Klaus Fiehe on Einslive, who played a lot of Drum & Bass. So I spend my Saturday nights in front of the radio and recording all those shows on tape instead of going out and meet friends. Until today I prefer listening to music at home or in the car. I still live far away from any big city and I’ve only been to two clubs in my whole life (one of them being the old Ostgut in Berlin), but I listening to every kind of electronic music every minute when I’m at home.

What is your mix about?

When I create a new mix I usually have two kinds of ambitions: On the one hand I want to take the listener on a musical journey, and on the other hand I want to surprise him with new sounds. So you normally find a cheesy pop tune in my underground mixes, or a very experimental tune in a mainstream mix. I also get bored pretty quickly, so normally after 3 or 4 tracks every mix goes into a completely different direction than actually planned. But mostly when a mix is finished the whole musical journey must come to a coherent conclusion, otherwise I wouldn’t release the mix. Nevertheless this mix is a little bit different from my previous mixes: This time I wanted to play a harder, stomping set, which I managed to do in the second half of the mix quite well. But after a few very minimal and kicking tunes I got bored again, that’s why I ended the mix with some pretty camp tunes by DJ Hell and Grace Jones.

Born in Yokohama in 1980, Shinya has gradually become a major figure in Tokyo’s electronic music scene. He has organized parties in some of the best clubs in town and established a growing fanbase of artists and clubbers alike. As a DJ himself, he currently holds a residency at AGEHA, one of the biggest and most popular clubs in town. Given a population of almost 9 million people, this is quite an achievement and yet another prove of his talents. The following mix gives you a taste of Shinya’s impeccable track selection and mixing skills, delving into the bowels of the metropolis with some deep and dubby soundscapes.

Three questions with Shinya Okamoto:

Where do you come from and where do you play at the moment?

I come from Japan. I live in Tokyo now and I currently have residencies in several clubs in Tokyo, among them Ageha, Womb, Unit and Warehouse702.

How would you describe your influences?

I’ve been a vinyl collector since I was a teenager, but back then it was mostly Rock, Punk, Alternative and Jazz. After that I met dance music. In those days, friends of mine were already playing out every weekend and I went with them all the time and I became interested in electronic music. After a while I started organizing parties in Tokyo myself – “Reveal” and “Dial” were the names. Past guests were Minilogue, Dave Mothersole, Estroe, Efdemin, Garnica, Sety and many more. Producers that influenced me the most were Kaito (Kompakt), So (Mind Games), Lawrence (Dial) and Aril Brikha. And of course my friends!

What is your mix about?

Driving. Emotional. Melancholic. Music.

Gothenburg might be primarily known for its sheer endless supply of pop and indie acts, but for the seventh edition of our Beatcast, we dipped into the city’s electronic music scene. “I try to put as much energy as I can into it”, Camilla Lindberg answers the question regarding what her own productions are about. As Miss Cmy, the young Swedish DJ released on labels such as Cologne’s Modularfield and Paris based Mad Bros Records. The passionate commitment of hers can also be found in her latest mix, which reveals an impressive span of tasteful picks from lesser-known labels. Starting catchy with more classic dub sounds and building up warm and stripped down, it finds its peak in a short but effective acid house madness, proving perfectly fresh for those upcoming summer nights.

Three questions with Miss Cmy:

Where are you coming from and when did you start DJing?

I started with some sporadic Djing around summer 2007 when I lived in Amsterdam. But it was only with CDs and without proper mixing. Back in Sweden, I learned how to mix vinyls and shortly upon I got my first gig in winter 2008. Afterwards, I found myself playing almost every week in local bars & restaurants here in Gothenburg. Once a month I played on a boat with a group of DJs called the Docks. That brought me to other cities in Sweden and, at last, to Berlin. Right now I am and have been a resident in different places here in my home city, and I’m also involved in a techno collective called Technoforia which focuses on all kinds of Techno, everything from Detroit, Minimal, Acid to hard-style Techno. But after all, it’s a small scene over here and there are not many places supporting this particular kind of music.

How would you describe your musical origins and influences?

My influences come mostly from new wave punk from the 80′s and some indie bands. I was totally a pop music nerd during middle/high school time. I can also really enjoy jazz and rock music. I love going to jazz clubs and just get the energy from the people playing. So luckily my influences are quite widely spread. Actually, I found my love for electronic music pretty late. I was around 20. The inspiration for producing my own tracks I draw only partly from playing out in clubs. I don’t listen to all that much club music at home, I need something else to get the energy – or at least I need both. When it comes to electronic music it’s often quite low tempo beat, experimental, dub or film-music.

My favorite among all my influences, to name a few, are: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, Suicide, John Carpenter (the movie director!), Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Half Japanese, My Bloody Valentine, Velvet Underground, Jesus and Mary Chain, Daft Punk, Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin. I’m also really into french singers.

What is your mix about?

To find the deepness and greatness in yourself and to be able to develop it in concrete action. It’s about focusing on the parts that you love the most and can’t live without.

The fifth edition of our Beatcast series comes from Kraków’s very own Marek Stuczynski, better known under his DJ moniker Eltron John, who has been spining records for three years now, and who currently hosts the regular “Ktoś Cie Kocha” (Someone Loves You) night in Kraków’s Caryca and Warsaw’s Balsam club, as well as playing gigs all over Poland. As the title already suggests, this ain’t your average minimal techno mix, but rather a journey into the depths of Funk and Disco, spiced up with a love for vocals and skillfully blended House music, taking a bow to Eltron’s personal influences and favourite records, all of this while maintaining a tight groove, which also touches your heart in places. Whether it’s New York City or southern Poland, it is the prove that Funk and Disco are still going strong.

Three questions with Eltron John:

Since when do you DJ?

I’ve been djing in clubs for about 3 years now, but I’ve been into music for my entire life – listening, collecting, dancing, playing in bands, writing music, trying production, although I still have to get a proper demo out…

How would you describe your musical origins and influences?

Soul, rock, funk, jazz and blues. My first ever tapes were Stevie Wonder and Queen – that was when I was about 6. When I got a bit older I got into things like Hendrix, the Stones, all the George Clinton Parliament/Funkadelic stuff, Prince, Miles Davis etc. We had this band with a couple of friends, called Act of Intellect. I wanted it to sound something like Bitches Brew. Later, when I got a sampler, I took some interest in dub as well. And through soul, funk and all that I got into disco, which has definitely had a huge influence on me – both musically and culturally. It is only through disco that I discovered house music for myself.

What is your mix about?

The idea is very simple – I wanted to keep it as natural as possible. I love variety and value surprise, but I didn’t want to overdo it and record something completely abstract, something you could never hear me do in a club. So I just took some well-loved tunes that I enjoy playing out (you can tell from the state of the vinyl), threw some of my own stuff for good measure and tried to put it together so that it makes sense – musically and emotionally. I hope it does.
